My passion for ceramics began at a very young age, inspired by both my grandmother and father, who passed down their love for the craft. At twelve years old, I started using my dad’s kick-style potter’s wheel to create bowls and vases, and I further nurtured my interest by taking classes at the Massillon Museum. While my early exposure to ceramics sparked my creativity, I ultimately pursued a career in mechanical engineering, designing high-speed seamer equipment for the food and beverage industry. After years of dedication to engineering, I retired, which provided me with the opportunity to return to my artistic roots and fully immerse myself in ceramics.
To refine my skills, I took classes at the Canton Museum of Art for several years before being accepted into the Canton Ceramics Artists Guild in 2023. Becoming a member of the Guild has been an invaluable experience, allowing me to share my knowledge of ceramics with students while also learning from talented ceramic artists. This collaborative environment has greatly enriched my artistic journey, providing inspiration and opportunities to explore new techniques.
My current work focuses on throwing on the potter’s wheel, extruded ceramics, sculpture, and hand-building techniques. Drawing from my engineering background, I design and create my own extruders and dies to enhance my sculptural work, pushing the boundaries of my ceramic practice. Beyond the creative process, I find great fulfillment in participating in art shows and engaging with the broader artist community, where I can share my work and connect with others who are equally passionate about the craft.
