Working in clay began as part of my undergraduate studies in the early 1960s and continued through graduate school. From time to time, I have had to step away from the pottery studio to focus on advancing my education, conducting research, and an assortment of responsibilities.
The potter’s wheel has become my preferred way of making work. I focus on producing visually appealing work that reflects the unique qualities of reduction-fired stoneware clay that people see and use every day. After each firing, I look closely at the outcomes and consider possibilities for exploring different ways of using proportion, scale, texture and decoration to provide positive outcomes.
In addition to wheel throwing, my approaches to working in clay included using coil and slab construction. While the expectation for visual invention may seem somewhat simple, finding unique ways to deal with line, proportion, texture, color and detail remain at the forefront of my attention.
I am pleased to be among CCAG’s list of members that include many designer-craftsmen who share my interest and enthusiasm for working with clay.
